Introduction to Barbering

The Introduction to Barbering course is for students who have no prior knowledge in Barbering or Hairdressing and wish to learn the basic techniques of cutting and finishing hair. You will learn the foundations of cutting men’s hair from basic sectioning and clipper work to outlining, tapering and styling. This course is designed to give an insight into barbering through hands on practical work.  There is no formal qualification with this course, but you do get a certificate of attendance to say you completed the course.

You don’t need any equipment with you as we have all the tools you need here at the School, (however if you have your own tools please feel free to bring them).  You will need models each night, one model per night for the first three weeks and two models per night for the remaining three nights.  Ideally someone who gets a 2,3 or 4 on the back and sides and a scissor cut on top (skin fades are too advanced for this course).

  • Assessing head shape and growth patterns
  • Correct method of holding scissors and comb
  • Introduction to scissors work
  • Basic sectioning
  • Introduction into clipper work
  • Outlines & tapering
  • Scissors over comb
  • Styling men’s hair

Level 2 Certificate in Barbering

14 Weeks,   Monday  6.45pm – 10.30pm


  • May 14th to August 27th                                       
  • September 10th to December 10th

Included in the cost are course registration and exams fees and a tool kit to the value of €250.00

This qualification is an internationally recognised certificate being both assessed and adjudicated by fully qualified centre staff at the Kildare School of Barbering.

The Level 2 Certificate in Barbering (VTCT) is a qualification that has been specifically designed to develop your practical skills in; the creative art of cutting men’s hair, the specialist work of cutting facial hair and how to offer a good consultation service for clients.

Underpinning this qualification you will develop a sound knowledge of health and safety whilst working in the barbering industry. You will also develop a knowledge and understanding of the practical skills learned throughout this qualification.

Modules: (Modules listed are mandatory and must be completed)

  • Follow Health & Safety practices in the salon (3 credits)
  • Client consultation for hair services (3 credits)
  • Cut facial hair (4 credits)
  • Cut men’s hair (6 credits)

Student’s will be required to provide a minimum of 2 models each week for the duration of the course.  You will also be required to have models for the assessment towards the end of the course for haircuts and beard trims.

Students will also have to undertake a written assessment for each of the four modules and complete 8 haircut assessments and 4 facial hair assessments (beards).

This qualification can lead directly into employment in the barbering industry as a junior Barber.


When you have successfully completed this qualification, you will have the opportunity to progress to the following VTCT qualifications:

  • Level 3 Certificate in Barbering
  • Level 3 Diploma in Barbering

Modern Barbering  

1 Day, Sunday 12.00 noon– 4pm

This course is suitable for students with a background in ladies hairdressing  and those who have been out of the industry for a while  wishing to update their skills to include classic and modern barbering techniques. Classes can be tailored to suit your needs. Models are required each week.

  • Trimming of beards
  • Product recommendation and application
  • Finishing techniques

Hot Towel Shave Course     

1 Day, Sunday 12.00 noon – 4pm

  • November 18th

This course is designed to teach the art of the hot-towel shave to either complete novices or to practicing professionals. Centred around an intense 1 Day training schedule the course will equip you with the essential knowledge required to conduct Hot-Towel Shaves in your barbershop/salon commercially. All equipment is supplied, students are required to provide models for training.

Hair Tattoo Design Course

1 Day, Wednesday 7pm – 9pm

This course will teach you the art of hair tattoo designs.  These are excellent for your customers to make a statement on their personal style whether for men or women.
